Germany will vote in a new parliament on September 27. Until now campaigning has been rather unspectacular as the two strongest parties, the conservative CDU and the social-democratic SPD, have ruled in a grand coalition since 2005. A television duel between CDU Chancellor Angela Merkel and her SPD challenger Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Sunday night was little marked by dissent. The European press comments the state of Germany two weeks ahead of election day.
