Opel starts painful restructuring

 

The carmaker Opel plans to close its plant in Antwerp in the middle of 2010 and lay off the factory's roughly 2,600 employees. The company has said it wants to cut 8,300 jobs across Europe. Some commentators compare the new strategy with the Wild West, while others see in it the first step toward a brave new car industry.
