The Irish people have voted by 60.3 percent in favour of the EU fiscal compact. The result of last Thursday's referendum was eagerly awaited because the Irish are the only nation to be allowed to vote directly on the treaty for fiscal discipline. Some commentators see the disciplined Irish as an example for Europe to follow, while others say the country has swallowed this bitter pill only because it is crippled by fear.
