Standart - Bulgaria | Wednesday, December 7, 2011Bulgaria's greedy clergy
Kirill, Metropolitan of the Black Sea city of Varna, drove to mass last Tuesday in a luxury model Lincoln MKZ. Only he and US President Barack Obama currently own the new model, which won't be launched on the Bulgarian market until 2012, he explained proudly to journalists. The daily Standart is indignant: "When normal citizens start buying expensive toys it is often attributed to a midlife crisis or recklessness. But you can't do this with politicians or priests. Priests serve God, the Church and the people. Politicians, too, are there to serve the people. But when the taxpayer sees them in their expensive cars they get angry. So that's what you spend my money on, they say. If at least the state functioned, but it doesn't. Yet you still live like oil sheikhs. ... The Bulgarians don't want to work for somebody who robs them. And they certainly don't want to work for politicians and clergy who force them to live in a crisis while for them there's no such thing as a crisis."
